Freeze or blur, ND choices, and why waterfalls are harder than they look

Decide first: freeze or blur

Either way, something in the frame must be sharp — rocks, a branch, the bank. Water alone, all blurred, is a texture, not a photograph.

How fast is "frozen" depends entirely on the water: a slow mountain stream may stop at 1/60 s; Niagara-scale falls need 1/1000 s or faster.

Longer is not always better

Exposure length is a creative variable, not a ladder. In a tested sequence at 4 s, 15 s and 29 s, the 4-second frame had the strongest effect — beyond that the movement averaged into mush. As a starting range, 1/2 s to 30 s covers most moving-water work. Shoot several lengths of the same composition and choose later.

Why waterfalls are difficult

The reason they're beautiful is the reason they're hard: they sit in gorges, valleys and deep forest. Extreme contrast causes the exposure problem — bright white water and sky against dark wet rock and shadow.

Coastal variation

On rock platforms and beaches, the shutter speed choice becomes a wave-timing choice: about 1/2 s–2 s for streaming water pulling off rocks, 10 s+ for flattened, misted sea. Fire on the retreat, not the arrival.
