Topographic landscape

Emphasise the land's form, texture and structure with high sharpness and detail.

• Tripod for sharpness and consistent framing.
• Narrow aperture (higher f-number) for front-to-back depth.
• Graduated ND to balance sky and land; polariser to cut reflections.
• Shoot the golden hours — raking light reveals contour and shape; return in different weather.
• Compose with layers, leading lines and known-size objects for scale.

New Topographics (urban)

Overlooked urban fabric — decay, industrial elements, geometry and pattern.

• Centred, "matter-of-fact" framing; keep verticals and horizontals straight (a tripod helps).
• Low contrast, subdued colour — subtlety over spectacle.
• Wide-angle lenses to convey scale and geometry.
• Build the frame from a clear focal point; ask if every element earns its place.
• Long exposures for car trails, moving crowds or water.
• Juxtapose natural and man-made for scale and quiet commentary.

Urban gothic

The gothic of contemporary cities — decay, shadow and mood in the built environment; a minimalist, evocative treatment of overlooked spaces.

Industrial locations

• Expect harsh light: use higher ISO, a wide aperture and a fast shutter to prevent motion blur; a fast lens helps.
• Tripod for longer focal lengths and sharpness.
• Approaches: urban-exploration grit, architectural lines/symmetry, environmental portraits of workers, product/machinery, wide industrial landscapes.
• Safety & permission first — scout on Google Maps, contact the site manager, wear appropriate gear; offering staff copies opens doors.

Tilt-shift for landscape (TTArtisan 17mm)

The tilt is the transformative feature: a degree or two of forward tilt lays the plane of focus into the scene so foreground and distance are sharp in one frame — often replacing focus stacking and preserving moving foliage/water. Or use more tilt for a deliberately narrow, dreamlike band of focus. Shift keeps verticals straight and enables ultra-wide, low-distortion stitched panoramas (100 MP+ on the a7R III). Sharpest at f/8–f/11; it's fully manual, so use Focus Magnifier and Peaking. Learn tilt before shift.

Minimalist sky/foreground blend

Simplify by managing the two zones separately: a graduated mask from the top (raise exposure, drop whites), add clarity and contrast to the focal point, then clean up.
