Choosing aperture, the lens sweet spot, hyperfocal & five practical DOF rules
DOF gets shallower when focal length increases, subject distance decreases, aperture widens, or magnification increases. Macro hits all four at once — which is why it is so thin.
Lenses are softest wide open and at their smallest apertures (diffraction). The sharpest point is usually two stops down from maximum:

As a rule of thumb, f/8–f/11 yields the sharpest results across most lenses. For a zoom, count up two full stops from its widest aperture (e.g. f/3.5 → ~f/7); anywhere f/7–f/10 is safe.
Pick f/8 or f/11, then focus about one-third of the way into the frame. Results are sharp edge-to-edge and front-to-back without going to tiny apertures.
Unsure how much DOF you need? Frame the subject, fire three quick frames at f/5.6, f/8, f/11, zoom in on the LCD, and keep the one that holds. After a few shoots the choice becomes instinctive.
Depth of field falls roughly one third in front of the focal plane and two thirds behind it, which is why "focus a third into the scene" works as a hyperfocal shortcut.
The trap: the trick is usually taught with a tiny aperture like f/22 — and at the extreme end of a lens's range, diffraction destroys the sharpness the depth of field just bought you, most visibly at the frame edges. Use the hack at f/8–f/11 instead and place the focal point about a third up from the bottom of the frame. Sharper edge to edge and front to back.
To shift the zone: move the focal point up the frame for more background sharpness, down for more foreground.
